Thank you for a phenomenal year
We have had a phenomenal year at The Sloth Conservation Foundation and our success is all down to the kindness and generosity of our supporters. To every single person that has supported our work, adopted a sloth, made a donation, sponsored a project, fund-raised for us, bought our merchandise or even just shared our posts on social media – thank you so much.
The end of 2019 marks our third full year as a registered charity and what a year it has been! In the last 12 months, we have quadrupled in size as an organisation and this has allowed us to take our sloth conservation efforts to new levels.
We couldn’t have done it without you.
We have planted sloth-friendly trees to create biological corridors that connect 29 different forest fragments in the South Caribbean. Over the next 10 years, the 30 species of native trees that we have planted over an area of 30 km2 will absorb over 12,500 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere every single year.
Over 400 meters of canopy bridges for sloths and other arboreal wildlife were installed, and we have placed camera traps on each of the bridges to monitor their usage.
Our educational outreach workshops reached over 300 Costa Rican school children and we have advocated responsible tourism to 81,000 people visiting the South Caribbean through our “Don’t Stress The Sloths” campaign.
We have insulated 12 electrical transformers in wildlife electrocution hotspots, and we have sterilized 30 stray dogs since October 2019.
We have accomplished all of this as an incredibly small hard-working team. It is thanks to the passion and dedication of our volunteers that we have been able to keep our overhead costs to an absolute minimum and make so much progress towards ensuring a safer future for sloths.
Looking ahead to 2020 we have no plans to slow down!
Alongside expanding and increasing our current programs, we also have some exciting new initiatives that we will be launching in the New Year. These include community-based projects that will generate an alternative, sustainable income for local people and consequently reduce the need for the unsustainable exploitation of the forest. Hint: if you love sloths and you love chocolate then you will definitely love what we have planned for 2020!
Together we really are making a difference, but we can only continue this vital work with your support – join us in turning over a new leaf in 2020 and consider donating to one of our projects. As your support has shown, every contribution helps!
