Grooming

Sloths spend a surprisingly large amount of time grooming – keeping their coat in good condition is important for many reasons. The short, fine under layer helps to keep the sloth warm, while the long, coarse outer layer helps to protect them from the rain. Sloth hair grows in the opposite direction to that of other mammals, from the stomach towards the back, forming a ‘drip-tip’ that drains rain water off the body.
