Celebrating International Sloth Day 2024!
International Sloth Day is celebrated every October 20th, and it’s the day to learn more about the world’s slowest-moving mammal, raise awareness about the problems they are facing, and how to help wild sloths. But it’s not just a single day—throughout the entire month of October, which we call “SlothTober,” we celebrate sloths and amplify our work to protect these incredible creatures and their habitats.
Celebrating and Raising Awareness
Sloths play an important role in tropical forest ecosystems: they are indicators of environmental health and have significant cultural and economic importance in countries like Costa Rica. Sloths are an ‘umbrella’ species: protecting them and the habitat in which they live ultimately benefits a whole host of other species, from poison dart frogs to Great Green Macaws.
However, their rainforest home becomes more fragmented and degraded with each passing day. Sloths are facing numerous threats, but we are actively studying them and developing conservation initiatives to ensure their survival and protect their natural habitats.
Slow Down and Celebrate International Sloth Day
Besides keeping our forests healthy, sloths inspire us to slow down. They are a valuable antidote to the fast-paced digital world we live in. Like the classic story of the tortoise versus the hare, sloths are living examples of the many ways to be “successful” in this world, and this fact resonates with many people from our International Sloth Community.
And we’re not exaggerating when we say ‘International’; check out the map to see all the countries where our amazing community members are from!
You can join our SlothTober and Sloth Day celebrations on our social media and participate in our games, trivia, and quizzes. Be sure to check out your local environmental organizations or zoos to see if they’re hosting any related activities. And of course, you can simply relax on your couch, take a nap, and spend the day chilling and unwinding—or just doing nothing at all!
